In the pictures below, Jezel and Ethan are adjusting the lights and adding the nutrient solution to the system. As the plants grow bigger and taller, the lights need to be adjusted higher so that the leaves do not burn. Just 30 days later, the lettuce are looking lush and ready for the plucking! Olmetie lettuce generally takes 30 to 40 days to grow to the harvesting stage. Plants grow faster in hydroponics than in soil due to various factors, such as lack of competition from weeds, consistent conditions due to the automated system, no significant change in climate, etc. You can learn more about the reasons here: https://plantprovider.com/7-reasons-why-hydroponic-plants-grow-faster/ If you are interested in starting your own hydroponic system at home but unsure of how to begin, feel free to reach out to Team Pisces student leaders or myself (Ms Lai). We'll be more than happy to help you embark on your own food growing journey =)

Other examples of edible flowers include pansies, violas, marigolds, roses, nasturtiums, lavenders, chamomile, etc. Grow these edible flowers to spruce up your garden with a vibrant myriad colours and fragrances :)
I love growing fruiting edibles. It's delightful watching them develop from seeds to seedlings, till they flower and finally fruit. I have a three-tiered hydroponics system which my husband constructed, and a Click & Grow Smart Garden 9 system at home. These both use LED lightings as my home receives little sunlight in the balcony. In case you're wondering what a Click n Grow system looks like, it looks like this :
Currently, I am growing Tiny Tim tomatoes in the ebb-n-flow segment of our hydroponic system. Tiny Tim is a dwarf heirloom variety of tomatoes. They are stocky with strong stems and dense foliage. The types of plants I can grow in my hydroponic system at home are very much limited by the height they grow to. Tiny Tim tomatoes typically grow up to no more than 30 cm and are a determinate variety. Indeterminate varieties refer to plants that will continue to grow taller and produce more until the plant is killed by frost. Hence, indeterminate varieties will definitely not work in our hydroponic system as the leaves can be burnt by the lights when they get too tall.
I love spicy food and am growing chilis too. The chilis I'm growing have dainty white flowers and are self pollinating. Chilis pepper pods are technically berries and they belong to the genus Capsicum. The intensity of the "heat" of chili peppers is commonly denoted in Scoville Heat Units (SHU), which measures the concentration of capsaicinoids. Capsaicin is the chemical responsible for the spicy sensation within a pepper. Some day, I wish to try growing the Carolina Reaper, which is listed as the hottest chili pepper by the Guinness World Records at 2.2 million SHU!
These are some plants that were grown in our school garden before. Did you notice them?
